Product Summary

TotalBoat Gleam Marine Spar Varnish is a one-part varnish made for protecting and finishing wooden areas on boats and yachts.

It leaves a clear amber finish that brings out the natural colour of the wood while helping protect it from sunlight, moisture and normal marine exposure. It is available in gloss and satin, so you can choose between a traditional high-shine finish and a softer, lower-sheen look.

The gloss version is the more obvious choice for exterior brightwork such as handrails, capping rails, hatch surrounds and cockpit trim. Satin is generally better suited to interior woodwork or as a final coat over a gloss varnish build.

It can be applied by brush, roller or spray, and TotalBoat recommends building up at least four to six coats. As with any marine varnish, the finished result will depend more on preparation and application than it does on the product alone.

Product Summary

Awlgrip Awlwood Clear Gloss is a one-component, high-gloss marine varnish designed for exterior wood above the waterline. It is normally used with Awlwood Primer to create a fast-curing varnish system with strong flow, high abrasion resistance and a finish that can be polished and repaired.

This is a more modern varnish system than a traditional spar varnish. It is particularly well suited to professional brightwork projects where durability, build speed and long-term maintenance are important.

TYMH has worked with Awlwood Clear Gloss extensively, particularly on teak rails, cap rails, exterior tables and other high-end yacht brightwork. When correctly prepared and built to the proper film thickness, it produces a deep, premium gloss that stands up well to regular onboard use.

One of its biggest advantages is how well the finish can be restored. Light scratches, loss of gloss and minor surface marks can often be sanded, polished or recoated without stripping the entire system back to bare timber. However, it still requires careful preparation and disciplined application. This is not a shortcut varnish, and it is less forgiving than a basic single-pack coating if the surface, timing or film build is wrong.

International Schooner Varnish is a traditional one-component, tung-oil-based yacht varnish designed for interior and exterior wooden surfaces above the waterline.

It produces the classic varnished appearance many owners and crew are looking for: a deep gloss with a warm golden colour that gives the timber a darker, richer finish. It is suitable for different types of wood, including oily timbers such as teak and iroko, when the surface is prepared correctly.

Schooner also contains UV filters and is formulated to provide water resistance, good flow and self-levelling during application. However, it is still a traditional varnish system. Achieving a good finish requires careful preparation, several coats, sanding between coats and suitable drying conditions.

Product Summary

Epifanes Clear High Gloss Varnish is a traditional one-component marine varnish designed to create a deep, high-gloss finish on interior and exterior wood above the waterline. The formulation is based on tung oil and phenolic-modified alkyd resins, with UV absorbers added to support exterior wood protection.

It can be applied by brush, roller or spray and is commonly used as part of a multi-coat varnish system rather than as a quick single-coat finish. Epifanes lists a drying time of approximately 12 hours and a recoat time of approximately 24 hours at 65°F, although actual timings will depend on temperature, humidity, film thickness and application conditions.

Onboard, TYMH sees Epifanes Clear Varnish as particularly well suited to traditional yacht brightwork, including handrails, cap rails, masts, helms, wooden blocks, exterior trim and selected interior joinery.

This is not a shortcut varnish. It makes the most sense when the aim is to build a proper protective coating with sufficient film thickness, careful sanding and planned maintenance. Epifanes explains that multiple penetrating and build coats are required to anchor the system into the wood and provide suitable UV protection.
