Product Summary

Awlgrip Awlwood Clear Gloss is a one-component, high-gloss marine varnish designed for exterior wood above the waterline. It is normally used with Awlwood Primer to create a fast-curing varnish system with strong flow, high abrasion resistance and a finish that can be polished and repaired.

This is a more modern varnish system than a traditional spar varnish. It is particularly well suited to professional brightwork projects where durability, build speed and long-term maintenance are important.

TYMH has worked with Awlwood Clear Gloss extensively, particularly on teak rails, cap rails, exterior tables and other high-end yacht brightwork. When correctly prepared and built to the proper film thickness, it produces a deep, premium gloss that stands up well to regular onboard use.

One of its biggest advantages is how well the finish can be restored. Light scratches, loss of gloss and minor surface marks can often be sanded, polished or recoated without stripping the entire system back to bare timber. However, it still requires careful preparation and disciplined application. This is not a shortcut varnish, and it is less forgiving than a basic single-pack coating if the surface, timing or film build is wrong.

Its main advantage is durability. It holds up well on capping rails, handrails, tables and other areas that receive regular contact, cleaning and exposure. Awlgrip also describes the coating as highly abrasion-resistant, buffable and repairable, which matches TYMH’s experience of maintaining it onboard.

It also works particularly well on properly prepared teak. The finish has good depth, builds into a premium gloss and can be restored through careful sanding and polishing when the surface begins to lose its appearance.

Awlwood is not the easiest varnish for a first-time user. Preparation, primer application, recoat timing and total film build all need to be correct. Do

  • Prepare the timber properly and remove dust, oil, moisture and contamination.
  • Use the correct Awlwood Primer when building a new system on bare timber.
  • Build the full recommended coating thickness rather than relying on heavy coats.
  • Sand carefully between working days and before applying the final coat.
  • Use suitable gloves, eye protection, ventilation and respiratory PPE.

Don’t

  • Apply Awlwood over damp, oily or poorly prepared teak.
  • Flood the early coats in an attempt to fill the grain quickly.
  • Use universal or alcohol-based thinners.
  • Pour unused product from a working pot back into the original tin.
  • Polish or sand aggressively around edges where the coating is thinner.

Yes, it can work very well on properly prepared teak trim and brightwork. TYMH has used the system extensively on teak with strong results. However, correct degreasing, sanding, primer selection and film build are essential.

 

Awlgrip specifies a minimum of eight coats to achieve the recommended exterior film build of at least 250 microns. Deep-grained timber may require additional work during the initial grain-filling stage.

Yes. Awlgrip describes the coating as buffable and repairable. Once the finish is fully cured and has sufficient film thickness, light defects and loss of gloss may be improved through careful sanding and polishing.

After the initial grain-filling coats, multiple coats may be applied in one day when the previous coat has cured enough to accept another coat. Temperature, humidity, sunlight and film thickness will affect the recoat time.

 

A new bare-wood system is normally built over the appropriate Awlwood Primer. Awlgrip recommends applying the first clear coat on the same day as the primer where possible to support adhesion.
