Product Summary

Epifanes Clear High Gloss Varnish is a traditional one-component marine varnish designed to create a deep, high-gloss finish on interior and exterior wood above the waterline. The formulation is based on tung oil and phenolic-modified alkyd resins, with UV absorbers added to support exterior wood protection.

It can be applied by brush, roller or spray and is commonly used as part of a multi-coat varnish system rather than as a quick single-coat finish. Epifanes lists a drying time of approximately 12 hours and a recoat time of approximately 24 hours at 65°F, although actual timings will depend on temperature, humidity, film thickness and application conditions.

Yes. It is specifically designed as a marine varnish for interior and exterior wood above the waterline. Always confirm that the timber, existing coating and proposed preparation method are compatible before application.

It depends on the timber, existing coating and exposure level. For a traditional bare-wood system on woods, Epifanes shows three progressively thinned penetrating coats followed by approximately five or six build coats.

Higher-UV areas, horizontal surfaces and tropical climates may require additional film thickness. Follow the current system sheet rather than applying a fixed number of coats to every surface.

 

It may be used within certain teak varnish systems, but oily teak can create adhesion challenges. Epifanes commonly recommends Wood Finish Gloss as a breathing one-component option or PP Varnish Extra as part of a sealed combination system for teak and iroko.

TYMH would identify the exact teak component first. Varnished teak trim or furniture is very different from a teak deck exposed to foot traffic.

 

Inspect it regularly and plan maintenance when the gloss starts to fade. Epifanes recommends two or more maintenance coats annually in some conditions, depending on UV exposure, climate, film thickness and surface orientation.

Yachts operating in the Mediterranean or tropics may need more frequent attention than boats stored under cover in lower-UV conditions.
