Product Summary

3M Perfect-It Gelcoat Light Cutting Polish + Wax is a one-step product made for restoring lightly faded or oxidised marine gelcoat. It combines a light abrasive polish with a wax finish, allowing minor correction, gloss improvement and basic protection to be completed in one stage.

3M states that it can remove light-to-medium oxidation, swirl marks, minor defects and scratches of P1500 or finer. It is suitable for light- and dark-coloured gelcoat and can be applied by hand or machine. The longer working time also helps prevent the product from drying too quickly during polishing.

Although 3M describes it as suitable for light-to-medium oxidation, TYMH sees its real strength as a quick restoration product for gelcoat that has only just started to fade. It is less aggressive than a medium or heavy cutting compound, making it easier to control, but it will not correct badly chalked gelcoat, deep scratches or serious surface deterioration.

Why TYMH Likes It

TYMH has used this product and likes it because it does exactly what a light one-step polish should do. On lightly faded gelcoat, it can bring the shine back quickly without feeling unnecessarily aggressive.

It is also easy to work with, which makes it a good option for someone relatively new to gelcoat polishing in a trained onboard or professional environment. The wax leaves a respectable finish and saves time when a full multi-stage correction is not needed.

However, we would not choose it for heavily oxidised or chalky gelcoat. The included wax is useful for a quick restoration, but a separate marine wax or sealant may still be preferable when longer-term protection is the priority.

Practical Use Notes / Dos and Don'ts

Do

  • Wash, decontaminate and dry the gelcoat before polishing.
  • Shake the bottle well and test a small area to check the level of correction.
  • Work in small sections using only enough product to maintain a thin working film.
  • Use a clean, suitable pad and inspect the finish after each pass.
  • Follow the product label and safety data sheet, including the required PPE and workplace controls.

Don’t

  • Apply the product in direct sunlight or onto warm gelcoat.
  • Overload the pad or allow the product to haze when applying it by hand.
  • Keep making aggressive passes if the gelcoat needs a heavier correction process.
  • Use it on painted, vinyl, rubber or silicone-sensitive surfaces without confirmed compatibility.
  • Assume the included wax will always provide the same durability as a separate protection stage.
