Product Summary

International Schooner Varnish is a traditional one-component, tung-oil-based yacht varnish designed for interior and exterior wooden surfaces above the waterline.

It produces the classic varnished appearance many owners and crew are looking for: a deep gloss with a warm golden colour that gives the timber a darker, richer finish. It is suitable for different types of wood, including oily timbers such as teak and iroko, when the surface is prepared correctly.

Schooner also contains UV filters and is formulated to provide water resistance, good flow and self-levelling during application. However, it is still a traditional varnish system. Achieving a good finish requires careful preparation, several coats, sanding between coats and suitable drying conditions.

Practical Use Notes / Dos and Don'ts

Do

  • Clean, degrease and sand the surface thoroughly before varnishing.
  • Use a clean brush kept specifically for varnish work.
  • Thin the first coat on bare wood by 10% with the recommended thinner.
  • Apply controlled coats and sand between them with the recommended abrasive grade.
  • Work in dry, ventilated conditions and follow the stated drying times.

Don’t

  • Apply over damp, dirty, peeling or poorly bonded varnish.
  • Apply heavy coats to reduce the number of applications.
  • Varnish in direct sunlight or excessively humid conditions.
  • Use Schooner below the waterline.

International Schooner Varnish is used to protect and finish interior and exterior yacht woodwork above the waterline. Typical areas include handrails, coamings, cap rails, hatch surrounds, trim and interior joinery.

Yes. The manufacturer states that Schooner can be used directly on oily timbers such as teak and iroko. The wood must still be properly sanded, cleaned and dry before application, with the first coat thinned according to the technical data sheet.

Schooner has a warm golden colour rather than a completely neutral clear finish. It gives timber a deeper, richer and slightly darker traditional varnished appearance. Testing it on a small or less visible area first is sensible when the final colour is important.

For bare wood, International recommends a first coat thinned by 10%, followed by approximately four to six full coats. Previously varnished surfaces generally require two to four coats, depending on the condition of the existing system and the finish required.

Yes. International recommends sanding between coats using approximately 320–400-grade abrasive and removing the dust before applying the next coat. This helps improve adhesion and removes small imperfections from the previous layer.

At a substrate temperature of approximately 25°C, Schooner is listed as touch dry in around two hours and ready to overcoat after approximately 12 hours. Colder temperatures slow the drying process, while high humidity can affect the gloss.
